Matthew Weiner
From Sopranopedia - The Sopranos Encyclopedia
Matthew Weiner is an American screenwriter and television producer. Weiner is currently a writer and Co-executive producer on the HBO series, The Sopranos, being on staff since the show's fifth season and has written over 5 episodes, including the controversial The Test Dream (with David Chase), Unidentified Black Males, for which he received an Emmy nomination with co-writer Terence Winter, and Luxury Lounge, a cult favorite which features screen legend Lauren Bacall being punched in the face. However, he is generally considered by fans and critics to be one of the show's weaker writers, having penned many of the series' most criticized episodes (The Test Dream, Luxury Lounge, Kaisha, Chasing It, Sentimental Education, Moe N' Joe).[citation needed] Weiner has also appeared in the series in the fifth and sixth seasons as writer Manny Safier, author of The Wise Guide to Wise Guys.
Before writing for The Sopranos, Weiner was also a writer on Becker, Andy Richter Controls the Universe and The Naked Truth.
Weiner is currently the creator and executive producer of a new series produced by AMC entitled, Mad Men. The series will premiere in July 2007. The pilot was directed by The Sopranos director, Alan Taylor. [1]
Weiner is a graduate of Wesleyan University and the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television.
